SA Liberals will oppose time zone move to the east

The State Liberals will oppose Jay Weatherill and Martin Hamilton-Smith’s push to move South Australia’s time zone to the east.

"The Weatherill Labor Government has failed to provide evidence that moving to the east will be a net positive for South Australia," said State Liberal Leader Steven Marshall.

"Even the Government’s own survey revealed that only 15 per cent of South Australians wanted to align with the eastern states – the overwhelming majority were opposed to the move.

"Liberal MPs from across the State have listened to South Australians and will oppose a move east.

"Changing the time won’t fix our economy.

"It’s now time for the Weatherill Labor Government to end the time zone distraction and start fixing the South Australian economy.

"South Australia is experiencing the highest unemployment rate in the nation and the value of merchandise exports has plummeted by $1 billion over the last 12 months.

"It is concerning that we already have the highest unemployment rate in the nation before the closure of the Port Augusta power stations, Leigh Creek coal mine and Holden.

"South Australia continues to languish at the bottom of the pack in terms of business confidence and conditions.

"These are the things that Premier Weatherill must focus on and fix.

"The State Government must reduce taxes and red tape, assist exporters and develop productive infrastructure.

"There is a positive future for South Australia but it requires decisive action from the State Government."
