There will be a lot more lycra and liniment across Adelaide as around 10,000 athletes and their supporters converge on our city for the 2019 Australian Masters Games.

The event, being hosted by South Australia for the seventh time, is one of the most popular multi-sport carnivals in Australia.

Boasting an impressive list of 45 sports across 70 venues, the Games have attracted participants from across the country and overseas.

With over 7,600 athletes, more than 4,300 from interstate, and hundreds travelling internationally to participate in the event, representing 23 countries including USA, the UK, South Africa and China.

Acting Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment David Pisoni said the Games also bring extra muscle to the state’s economy, with visitors expected to contribute more than $12 million during their stay.

“From powerlifting to pétanque, softball to sailing, there is a sport for everyone,” Minister Pisoni said.

“The Games are such a terrific event, giving people so many opportunities to make new friends, renew acquaintances, and also sample the very best of what South Australia has to offer.

“We know from previous Games that the participants enjoy every minute of being here, they bring friends and family members to help celebrate a great week in Adelaide, and while they are here, they become both athletes and advocates for our state.

“In fact, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that while the competition on the field is of a very high standard, you could consider some of the performances undertaken within the social program to also be right up there for gold medal contention!”

Mr Pisoni also paid tribute to more than 800 volunteers who are assisting with the staging of the games, and wished all participants a safe and enjoyable week.

“I’m sure there will be plenty of families looking forward to checking out the Dragon Boat Racing, which is the largest sport in the Games, and the other exciting sports on the program,” Minister Pisoni said.

The eight-day event will conclude with a concert and celebration at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Saturday 12 October.
